When BlueIndy launched in Indianapolis in 2015, it was part of a broader city commitment to sustainability. Mayor Joe Hogsett’s Special Resolution set a goal of carbon neutrality for the city and Marion County by 2050, and BlueIndy’s electric car-share network was one of the first visible steps toward that future.
Although the program went offline in May 2020, the City of Indianapolis chose to keep the existing infrastructure in place and repurpose it in support of the project’s original sustainability and transit goals. Since the program’s end, the equipment has been awaiting a new use, and as demand for EV charging has continued to grow, the City has needed a partner ready to revitalize additional locations.
Reduce, Reuse, and Recharge

Denison Mobility is stepping into that role, reactivating former BlueIndy sites and putting existing infrastructure back to work. It’s easy to think of sustainability in terms of new technology, but one of the most overlooked parts of “reduce, reuse, recycle” is simply making full use of what’s already there. By reusing existing wiring and curb sites instead of building from scratch, Denison Mobility is saving energy and materials while still delivering modern, reliable charging capacity to meet rising demand.
This approach is already in action at Butler University, where Denison Mobility completed the reactivation of a former BlueIndy site in June, the first the City of Indianapolis has approved for reuse, and the first Denison Mobility has completed. It won’t be the last. More former BlueIndy locations are in progress, and each one adds to a growing network of reactivated charging infrastructure across the city.
A full-service partner, from consultation to ongoing support
Reactivating a site is about more than plugging in new equipment. Denison Mobility manages every phase, starting with site consultation and forecasting to determine the ideal layout and charging capacity for each location. From there, the team handles installation and construction as a single point of contact, so property owners and city partners aren’t coordinating between multiple vendors. Once a site is live, Denison Mobility stays involved with maintenance, site monitoring, and integrated financial processing and reporting.
That full-service model is what makes reactivation projects like these possible, and it’s why Denison Mobility has more sites lined up for the same treatment.
More to come
This is the first in a series of updates on Denison Mobility’s work reactivating Indianapolis’s BlueIndy infrastructure. Watch for more location announcements as additional sites come online.
